NFPA Launches “Charge into Fire Safety” Campaign on Lithium-Ion Battery Safety

12/13/2024 — United Services by Permaco is working in coordination with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) to raise awareness about the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries and ways to minimize them. NFPA’s new campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety™”, includes an expanded series of resources, guidelines, and information in response to the concerns fire officials have about the growing number of fires caused by lithium-ion batteries that power micromobility devices such as e-bikes and e-scooters, smaller electronics such as cell phones and laptops, and electric vehicles. As the use of these items has increased in recent years, so, too, has the number of fires associated with them.

“Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly found in the many devices and systems we use every day,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA. “With this greater use, however, we are seeing an uptick in related fires, prompting people to contact us frequently with questions about battery safety. In response, NFPA created the ‘Charge into Fire Safety’ campaign with information that helps answer these questions clearly and thoroughly, in one easy-to-find location.”

NFPA and United Services by Permaco recommend these tips when buying, charging, storing, and using lithium-ion batteries to help prevent fires:

Only purchase and use devices, batteries, and charging equipment that are listed by a nationally recognized testing lab and labeled accordingly.
Use charging equipment that is only compatible with your device. To be safe, use only the charging equipment that is supplied with your device.
Do not keep charging the device or device battery after it is fully charged.
Do not put lithium-ion batteries in the trash. Recycling is always the best option. Take the batteries to a battery recycling location or contact your local waste department for disposal instructions.
Stop using your device if the battery shows signs of damage, such as an unusual odor, excessive heat, popping sounds, swelling, or change in color.
Only have device repairs performed by a qualified professional.

United Services by Permaco continues their partnership with Bernie’s Book Bank and hosts Battle of the Books

United Services by Permaco, Inc. headquartered in Lake Bluff, IL, has announced its continued support of Bernie’s Book Bank, a Chicagoland nonprofit focused on “significantly increasing book ownership among at-risk children.”

United Services has supported the mission of Bernie’s Book Bank since their inception in 2009. This year, United Services is organizing a Battle of the Books contest to collect children’s books. The book drive is a friendly competition among local insurance agencies to benefit the children Bernie’s Book Bank serves.

The battle commences April 18with a kickoff event hosted by United Services at Bernie’s Book Bank. Agents will learn more about the organization and volunteer in the processing center. Throughout the month of May, agents will continue the competition by collecting children’s books. The agency with the most books collected (per capita) will be announced as the winner of the battle. This is a fun, easy and meaningful way for insurance agencies to get involved and support at-risk children in the community.

Last year, United Services insurance agents donated over six thousand books to Bernie’s Book Bank! This was a huge accomplishment for United Services and the participating insurance agencies. The expectation is for this momentum to continue with this year’s book collection effort.

Bernie’s Book Bank sources, processes and distributes quality new and gently used children’s books to significantly increase book ownership among at-risk infants, toddlers and school-age children throughout Chicagoland.

“Reading is the single most important skill a child needs to learn. Yet studies show that 61% of low-income families don’t have any books at all in their homes for their children,” said Brian Floriani, Founder and Executive Director of Bernie’s Book Bank. “Bernie’s Book Bank aims to change that statistic by pouring quality children’s books into ‘at-risk’ homes, ensuring that children have access to books from birth and arrive at school ‘reading ready.’”
